CHILDREN from Musselburgh Burgh Primary School today (Thursday 8 March) sunk a time capsule at the new Musselburgh Primary Care Centre, giving people of the future an idea of what healthcare is like now and what it could be like in 100 years’ time.
Robot doctors, medical phone apps and a medical-in-a-minute are just some of the revolutionary ideas thought up by the primary six pupils in their specially-designed posters.
Samantha Reid, reacher, Musselburgh Burgh Primary School, said: “The children have really enjoyed making the posters for the time capsule as part of their health and wellbeing curriculum. It has given all of them a chance to be creative by thinking about the type of healthcare they receive now and how it may evolve in the years to come.”
Emma Brown, a primary six pupil who designed one of the posters, explained her idea: “I think that in 100 years’ time there will be an app on every phone. You will be able to type in your symptoms and a diagnosis will be delivered in minutes.”
Jade Smith, a fellow pupil, added: “If you are ill you won’t need to go to the doctors. You will go on your laptop and download your photo and all of your symptoms and it will tell you what the matter is.”
As well as the children’s posters, the time capsule will contain a copy of the Musselburgh News, a stethoscope and blood pressure checking device as well as pictures from the construction of the new centre including; architects drawings and archaeological findings discovered on site prior to its construction.
David Small, general manager, East Lothian and Midlothian Community Health Partnerships, said: “We are on schedule to complete the new centre in the spring and this ceremony marks a special moment in its construction. It’s been great to see the children planting a little piece of the present day on the site as it makes it more personal to us all and should be a great discovery in the years to come.
“The new Musselburgh Primary Care Centre will offer twenty-first century care for the people of Musselburgh and the wider community in East Lothian.”
The new Centre will accommodate three GP practices, such as paediatric and adult outpatient clinics, speech and language therapy, clinical psychology, children’s services, podiatry, physiotherapy, and community nursing. A new addition to the services will be two new community dental suites.
The development is on schedule to be completed in spring 2012.

- The £20 million, Musselburgh Primary Care Centre, extends to 6,312.5 square metres and boasts a state-of-the-art roof. The modern, self-cleaning atrium roof provides enhanced light throughout the boulevard and reception area which includes the entrances from Church Lane and Inveresk Road.
