AN orphaned meerkat which has captured the hearts of fans across Fife and Tayside will be meeting his public for the very first time this weekend at St Andrews Aquarium.
Oliver Twist was rejected by his mother shortly after birth and has been nursed around the clock by a dedicated team at St Andrews Aquarium in Fife, who have successfully weaned him off milk and onto solid food in recent days.
Born in St Andrews Aquarium on 19th January 2012, the little meerkat shot to fame at the beginning of February when his motherless plight was highlighted in a local newspaper.
Now the squeeking and adorable bundle of fur has grown strong enough to meet the many visitors to the Aquarium who have expressed their best wishes for his wellbeing over recent weeks.
Andrew Whiston, displays manager at St Andrews Aquarium, commented: “Oliver Twist has come on leaps and bounds since we first started caring for him and, for our team, it has really been a labour of love with 24/7 care and feeding throughout the night.
“However, he is now strong enough to be brought out into the Aquarium and we’re going to give the public their chance to meet him face to face for the first time this weekend.”
Oliver Twist will be making his special appearance at two meerkat talks at both 11am and 2pm this Saturday and Sunday.
He is one of 12 meerkats resident in the Aquarium and the team are hoping they can successfully reintroduce him to his brothers and sisters later this year.
