SCOTTISH folk band, the Peatbog Faeries, will this year headline at the Celtic Festival Barbados, which takes place from 7th – 14th June 2012.
Nominated for Best Live Act at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2012, the band members hail from the Isle of Skye. They will be supported by Sandra Macbeth and her band. Sandra hails from the tiny village of Glenelg in the Scottish Highlands.
A week long music festival, with a fusion of flavours on the food menu provided by award winning Edinburgh chef, Paul Wedgwood, takes place across this tiny Caribbean island that was once a British Colony.
A history of white indentured servants sent from Scotland, Ireland and Wales during Cromwell’s time gives the festival a celtic foundation and an active St Andrews Society which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year on Barbados are all strong Scottish connections. In November last year, the Scottish Parliament recognised the efforts of the Celtic Festival Barbados to connect Scotland with Barbados in a Members Motion.
Events will include a Concert with the Peatbog Faeries at Plantation Theatre on Friday 8th June, bagpipers on the Boardwalk on the South coast on opening night 7th June, a food demonstration with Chef Paul Wedgwood in the newly opened Limegrove Centre at Relish Epicurea on Saturday 9th June, followed by a rum shop tour.
Sunday Lunch at Atlantis Hotel, on the east coast of the island, last year featured haggis made from local black belly sheep and was hugely popular. Monday 11th is an Irish night at McBrides Irish Pub in St Lawrence Gap and further events still to be announced. Celtic Fusion a dance troupe from Nova Scotia will also take part – this Canadian team dance Scottish and Irish dances in full costume.
Included, in the itinerary will be options for a five hour lunch cruise on board luxury catamaran Cool Runnings, a jeep safari which takes guests deep into the sugar plantations and over to ‘Scotland District’ on the east coast of the island where the descendants of Scottish indentured servants, nicknamed ‘the Redlegs’ still live.
And a walk in the Flower Forest, a tourist attraction run by an Edinburgh University graduate David Speiler. Flowers from the Flower Forest have formed part of the award winning displays from Barbados at Chelsea Flower Show.
