A COMPANY which likes to have its cake but others to eat it, has expanded in to Aberdeen.
Bibi’s Bakery, which was founded in St Andrews and has an outlet in Edinburgh, has opened for business at the former Harley Clothing fashion shop in the city’s Schoolhill.
The business specialises in handmade cakes and is part of the cupcake culture which has seen an explosion in artisan bake houses and cafes.
The ten-year lease on the 710 sq ft ground, first floor and basement property was negotiated by FG Burnett on behalf of owners Wordie Properties Ltd, with Culverwell acting on behalf of Bibi’s.
Bibi’s owner, Fiona Pratt, said: “I know Aberdeen well from my university days and see it as a vibrant city with strong potential for a niche business like ours.
“There is a gap in the market for a city centre operation offering high-quality baking, all done on-site, and we are looking forward to introducing Bibi’s to Aberdeen.”
Kevin Jackson, senior surveyor with FG Burnett, said: “Bibi’s is a well-established business and brand and has opted for a city centre location in Schoohill which benefits from high footfall.
“Attracting this type of small, entrepreneurial business to Aberdeen is a positive addition to the city’s existing cafe culture.”
Mr Jackson said the Aberdeen retail market was showing encouraging signs of recovery and pointed to a rise in the number of units successfully let in the major shopping centres such as The Bon Accord and St Nicholas Centre and Union Square.
“This buoyancy has a knock on affect on Union Street and the surrounding shopping areas as retailers looking to come in to the city are now having to look outwith the covered centres for premises.”
