NEW research conducted by Mintel has revealed many new surprising Christmas facts. For example, one in five people in the UK only bake for a special occasions, such as Christmas. Mintel looked deep into their market intelligence to find out what everyone does throughout the festive period to make it extra special.
To continue with the Christmas cooking theme, the research discovered that an estimated £307 million in 2011 was spent on turkey alone. While the market for nuts and dried fruit reached £579 million in the previous year.
Along with the one in five who bake for special occasions, it was revealed that over seven in ten UK consumers have a go at home baking for the Christmas dinner.
And every Christmas would not be the same without alcohol, with three in five buying alcohol as a gift. 44 per cent choose white wine as their preferred choice throughout the festive period, whilst a surprising 71 per cent of people within the UK have some kind of liqueur at some point during the run up to Christmas day.
