HARPER Macleod LLP has been appointed by sportscotland, the national agency for sport, to provide legal advice and support as part of the Expert Resource Framework for Scottish governing bodies of sport, which cover more than 58 sports in Scotland.
Scottish governing bodies (SGBs) have a responsibility to govern, administer and deliver sports in Scotland, which includes managing regulations, developing coaches and athletes and organising and hosting competitions.
Harper Macleod will provide legal advice and support to the SGBs across a range of areas, including governance and corporate law, contract law, property law, employment law and intellectual property paw.
Chair of Harper Macleod, Professor Lorne Crerar, commented: “We are delighted to have been appointed as legal adviser to the Scottish Governing Bodies Expert Resource Framework and look forward to working in partnership with sportscotland and the SGBs to provide legal support which assists them in achieving a world class sporting system in Scotland.
“This appointment, in addition to our recent appointment to Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, reinforces our brand as a leading sports law practice in Scotland and the UK.”
Lorna Callan, partnership manager at sportscotland commented: “In these increasingly exciting times for sport, Scottish governing bodies need to be well organised with robust systems and strong governance in place.
“The experts in the fields of HR, Finance and Legal will support our partner organisations in providing a shared service to help develop and support a ‘world class’ sporting system in Scotland.
“sportscotland works in partnership with the people and organisations that make sport happen. By pooling our resources to provide this comprehensive range of support to SGBs we will be able to identify areas for development and provide a tailored improvement programme for our partners, building the capacity and knowledge within the sports sector.
“It is a very exciting project to be involved in and a real example of how partners can work together, share resources and services to develop sport for Scotland.”
The appointment is part of the Scottish Governing Bodies Expert Resource framework, a collaborative partnership project between the Scottish Sport Association and the Scottish Governing Bodies of Sport.
This represents another major sports law contract for Harper Macleod, which was recently appointed as official law firm to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games to provide the totality of their legal services from now until the conclusion of the Games.
Harper Macleod is already well known for its sporting links – they act for the Scottish Premier League and Celtic Football Club, among others, and one of its partners is legal adviser to the Scottish Rugby team.
The firm has also acted in some of sport’s most famous cases, such as Rugby’s ‘bloodgate’ and the appeal against the stripping of skier, Alain Baxter’s Olympic bronze medal.
