NEXT year marks the 90th anniversary of the founding of the BBC.
A new book, The BBC in Scotland: The First Fifty Years by David Pat Walker exposes the thrills and difficulties of what it meant to work in the now global institution during its formative years.
David Pat Walker (former assistant controller of BBC Scotland) chronicles how the determination and cutting-edge creativity of those who worked there helped to create the BBC we know today.
From its very beginning the BBC in Scotland made an indelible mark on the lives of generations of viewers and listeners.
Its creative staff delivered a vast array of programme ideas and formats while simulta-neously identifying and developing new talent from all parts of the nation.
These first stars went on to become household names throughout the UK.
BBC Scotland produced the first custom-built broadcast for schools and made international headlines with a spoof news bulletin, Broadcasting the Barricades, fooling listeners the length and breadth of the country.
It started Lift Up Your Hearts – A Thought For the Day for wartime listeners) and further aided the war-effort within the ‘Radio Padre’s’ broadcasts by virtue of coded messages for prisoners of war and the resistance.
