MUSSELBURGH Racecourse marches back in to action on Sunday (Sept 25) with its annual Royal Scots Family Day.
The centrepiece of the popular race day is a host of free attractions and activities provided by the solders of one of Scotland’s most distinguished regiments.
The Royal Scots Massed Bands beats the drum for Musselburgh, marching from the town’s Mercat Cross to the racecourse at 12.30pm and inside the East Lothian track children and adults will find plenty to keep them entertained.
An Army climbing wall, inflatable assault course, and Army combat demonstration are the main features for the adventurous, rounded off with a number of displays.
For younger children there is a craft workshop, face painters, an inflatable bouncy ride, trampolines, a roundabout and fairground ride.
The Pony Racing Authority also hosts two races, over five furlongs and one mile, as part of its Racecourse Series which culminates in a Finals Day at Aintree next month.
The PRA promotes the development of young jockeys and is aimed at nine-15 year-olds who are considering a career in racing. The pony races take place at 1.10pm and 1.15pm.
Up to £40,000 prize money is on offer throughout the eight race meeting and the feature race is the 3.55pm £12,000 EBF Fillies’ Handicap for three years old and over.
Musselburgh’s child friendly policy means all kids aged 16 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
Musselburgh Racecourse commercial manager, Sarah Montgomery, said: “The Royal Scots Family Day is always a bit special and as it’s our last family day of the summer season we are putting on a good variety of attractions which will appeal to all ages.
“It’s a great opportunity for families to come along and experience the thrill of horse racing and pay tribute to Scotland’s most famous regiment, the Royal Scots.”
Gates open at noon and the first race is at 2.15pm. Race goers who book online will receive a £2 discount on the admission price and a range of packages offer other savings.
