A DISUSED Perthshire Control Tower, dating back to the Second World War, is to be transformed into one of the most state-of-the art homes in Scotland.

The collection of homes at Clathymore, Gleneagles, developed by Perth-based Stephen Country Homes, is set to be complimented by the conversion of a 1940s building located on the edge of the site.

The company plans to convert the three-storey building into the most contemporary home it has ever created in its 75 year history, hot on the heels of Clathymore achieving ‘finalist’ status in the ‘Rural Development of the Year’ category of the Scottish Home Awards 2011.

The building  is currently of typical Royal Naval Air Station design, once located on the edge of  RAF Findo Gask airfield and previously forming part of a group of around 60 WWII structures.

Being transformed in conjunction with the development’s architect, James Denholm, the iconic structure had fallen into disrepair.

With works now underway, the four-bedroomed home, to be marketed for sale with a guide price of £1.75m, will stand in the shadow of significant and well-documented historical activity.

The Control Tower was in use from June 1941 until September 1948.

John Stephen, managing director, said: “We are excited to be embarking on this highly-contemporary transformation which represents a key stage in the company’s evolution.

“Due to the success of the Clathymore development, and its recent national recognition, it is timely and fitting that the Control Tower now takes on a new identity befitting such an impressive collection of homes.”

Meanwhile, Carl Warden of Savills, the agents marketing the property, described the Control Tower as “a home likely to attract international interest”, hailing the plans as a “brilliant solution for the re-use of this historic building”.

The existing building is essentially a cube on three floors with a flat roof and a cantilevered balcony.

The plans for its rebirth add a four-storey extension to the rear of the building which will house the stairs and a lift, culminating in a dramatic sun room linked to a roof terrace.

With a strong emphasis on high-spec contemporary living, with a bespoke feel, Stephen Country Homes will be making extensive use of glass with the home incorporating a ‘glass box’ to create an impressive and natural feeling of space, complimented by white render, stainless steel, aluminium and zinc finishes.

Much has also been made to maximise outdoor space with a balcony, sunroom roof and roof terrace, to take in the stunning views of the Perthshire hills.

A private gated entrance with driveway leads up to the imposing home in what is a fabulous Perthshire setting.

As well as the four bedrooms and spacious master suite with its own dressing area, the property will comprise of an extensive and open-plan family area, incorporating kitchen, living and dining space, as well as a separate drawing room, not to mention a triple garage.

Although secluded, the site lies just five/six miles (10km) west of Perth and just ten minutes from the A9. Dundee and its airport with direct flights to London is just 30 minutes away and, while Edinburgh is accessible in around one hour, buyers can arrive in the centre of Glasgow in less than an hour due to recent improvements to the M80.
