SPECIALIST Aberdeenshire oil service firm, ThinJack Ltd, has received an enthusiastic response following its call to North-east businesses and a local school to lend their support to an ambitious school building project in the Angolan capital, Luanda.
Says a spokesperson: “A recent meeting at the firm’s Westhill headquarters gave the chance to share information on the project and gauge potential support from business and the community. It was attended by North-east businesses such as PowerShock and Optima and community representatives who discussed ideas for mustering further support as well as the logistics involved in delivering educational resources to Luanda.
“In 2010, Westhill-based ThinJack completed its first contract in Angola and, whilst working in the country, director Guy Bromby, became aware of a ground-breaking project to provide education to some of the nation’s poorest children on the outskirts of the capital city, Luanda.”
Local man, former teacher, translator and oil worker Kisuka Baltazar (61) is gradually funding the improvement of the current school, with extremely modest facilities, using contributions from his own salary and a small number of donations from oil and gas companies working in Angola. Kisuka also has an ambition to build a larger school.
He said: “Thank you very much to my new friends in the North-east of Scotland for their consideration of help for my school project which will allow so many young boys and girls in Luanda to get an affordable education and support those teaching them.”
Guy Bromby added: “It was a great meeting of minds and that was very satisfying. Coincidentally, by the time the meeting had finished, ThinJack Ltd had spoken with a caller from an oil operating company suggesting where the Luandan school could access charitable funds at the oil company’s disposal, so the potential people and financial commitment to the project is already tremendous.
“There is much optimism in the North east of Scotland for support available in several months time.
“However, to start the ball rolling now, we are seeking individuals to help with sourcing, packing or delivery of basic stationery items for the school and I would be delighted to hear from anyone who can help.
“This could be absolutely anyone with a little time on their hands, perhaps including those who need to fulfil the requirements of the ‘volunteering’ section of a youth award scheme.
“We also hope that people will contact us if they have some spare time for checking and basic refurbishment of the second hand computers offered to the school.”
