A TEAM of disabled adventurers from are setting off for an experience of a lifetime.
Eight youngsters and four adults from Sandgate School, a special state school in Kendal, Cumbria, are to kayak across the Sound of Arisaig, part of the ‘Scottish Sea Kayak Trail’ which was recently named as one of the Top 50 Tours of a Lifetime by National Geographic.
The expedition which, is being hosted by Sea Kayak Arisaig, will run from 20-26th June and will take in 60 miles of open seas and sheltered waters along some of the most beautiful coastline of Britain.
“The youngsters of Sandgate are a classic example that sea-kayaking is for everyone, not just the young, fit and able-bodied. It is a great opportunity to experience some of the greatest natural wonders that Scotland has to offer surrounded by exotic wildlife such as dolphins, basking sharks, seals and otters,” said Steve Macfarlane of Sea-kayak Arisaig, based on the shores of Loch Ailort at Glenuig Inn.
Glenuig Inn, a historic inn dating from the 16th century, is a popular destination for sea-kayakers from around the world. Situated only 35 miles from Fort William and just off the Road to the Isles it provides a combination of traditional highland hospitality with modern, practical accommodation and easy access to one of the most spectacular and best playgrounds on the West Coast of Scotland.
“Sea-kayaking is an inclusive activity for the majority and allows them to take part in a very adventurous environment,” said Dan Hinton, the group leader.
“If our special needs pupils are not able to walk, then sea-kayaking is perfect. With the support of Aquabacs, which are special seats which adapt normal boats for disabled use, all students have the opportunity to go out on the water.”
“This week is the culmination of a many years of training for these youngsters. All of these students have done adventurous training as part of their schooling but this is the grand finale for their academic year.
“The Sound of Arisaig is the perfect environment for our expedition. If the weather is good we can paddle out to the islands of Eigg, Rum or Muck and back or if it is choppy, we turn right and head into the sheltered water of the lochs.”
The teenagers, all with severe learning difficulties and aged between 17 and 19 will go out in double sea-kayaks with the more experienced youngsters teamed up with the lesser. All eight are taking their Duke of Edinburgh Award with four being assessed for their Bronze Award on this trip.
The party will be staying at the award-winning Glenuig Inn which is ideally positioned 10m away from the beach. At high tide the students can be on the water in minutes.
“Glenuig Inn has been fantastic. We have stayed there before and we know it is warm, comfortable, has excellent food and the staff are all extremely accommodating.” said Dan Hinton.
