SOUTH Parks Primary School in Glenrothes and Pitcorthie Primary School in Dunfermline have beaten off stiff competition to come joint top in a Fife-wide competition to name the meerkats at St Andrews Aquarium.
Entries submitted by ten year-old Marc Penman (South Parks PS) and seven year-old Rebekka Stewart (Pitcorthie PS) stood out amidst hundreds of entries from across the county to steal the top prize of a free school trip for their entire class to visit the Aquarium.
Judges in the competition were especially taken by Rebekka’s entry, which offered up the name of Windsor for the third adult meerkat who arrived at St Andrews Aquarium earlier this year along with Kate & Wills.
It was felt that Windsor’s title was very much in keeping with the ‘royal’ theme of the adult meerkats, but they particularly liked Rebekka’s reason for entering the competition which her entry stated was “Because our teacher deserves a nice day out.”
Ten year-old Marc Penman’s entry also filtered quickly to the top of the judging pile with his suggested name of Piper, which will become the name of Kate & Wills’ baby meerkat.
Judges felt that ‘Piper’ was a very appropriate name for this noisy meerkat who has quickly become the most vocal member of the pack.
Both schools are now currently planning their summer trip to St Andrews Aquarium to meet their respective meerkats and enjoy their impromptu day out.
John Mace, manager of St Andrews Aquarium, commented: “Entries flooded in from right across Fife and it was a very difficult decision for judges, but both Rebekka and Marc’s entries stood out and we’re delighted that they will be able to share their triumphs with their classmates when they visit this summer.”
