Media Release: CLAN Cancer support to host open meeting for those affected by skin cancer

A LOCAL cancer support charity is hosting a meeting next week which will be open to anyone who has been affected by skin cancer.

CLAN Cancer Support will hold the session on Tuesday, April 17, alongside Hazel Carnegie, who has her own experience of the condition.

The meeting will take place at CLAN Cancer Support’s Westburn Road base from 7pm and will give those who attend the opportunity to chat with others who are in a similar situation.

Hazel hopes that the open meeting will encourage people to come forward and share their experiences as she feels there is a lack of support available specifically relating to skin cancer.

Hazel said: “I approached CLAN with the idea of hosting a group session as I know from personal experience that it often feels like there is a lack of support out there.

“Everyone at CLAN has been fully supportive of the idea and it has been great to link up with the charity in order to host the meeting.

“I hope that anyone who comes along will benefit from meeting with others; hopefully it may become a regular event.”

Claire Fraser, services manager at CLAN Cancer Support, added: “At a time when there is an increase in numbers of people affected by skin cancer, we can see that there is a need for ongoing support for patients and carers as they adjust to life after treatment.

“The value of support from a local peer group is huge when dealing with skin cancer, from experiencing symptoms and waiting for a diagnosis to going through treatment and beyond.”

“This initial meeting will be an opportunity to come together to work through some ideas of what support people feel they might like to see in place. We believe that CLAN has much to offer those affected by skin cancer and we look forward to helping to take this initiative forward.”
