RESPONDING to the announcement today (Tuesday 3rd April) from the Scottish Government that the Universal Home Insulation scheme is to be extended, the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations said tackling fuel poverty and improving energy efficiency must remain priorities for the Scottish Government.
David Stewart, SFHA policy and strategy manager, said: “The SFHA welcomes the continuation of the Universal Home Insulation Scheme, as fuel poverty continues to bite for many households in Scotland.
“While housing associations have the most energy efficient homes in Scotland, inflation-busting rises in domestic energy bills have seen investment in the energy efficiency of existing homes struggle to keep pace.
“That is why the SFHA is calling for continued and significant investment in a national retrofit programme to improve the energy efficiency of Scotland’s existing homes.
“This programme would cut fuel poverty; create jobs and training opportunities and help tackle climate change by reducing carbon emissions (as existing homes are responsible for over 25 per cent of Scotland’s carbon emissions).”
