Media Release: Margins Book & Music Festival 2012

CARGO Publishing, recent winners of The List Magazine’s Best Newcomer 2011 award, have announced the 2012 lineup for their second Margins Book & Music Festival that includes a new production of Alisdair Gray’s Fleck and some of Scotland’s best musicians, including Malcolm Middleton and Roddy Woomble.

The Festival now being held at The Arches will run 24th-26th February and will include a ‘festival area’, with a Waterstone’s bookstore, a record store and films chosen by Bafta-winning writer director, Ewan Morrison.

The lineup features performances from musicians such as Alasdair Roberts, Withered Hand and Aiden Moffat & Bill Wells.

The writers performing over the three days are drawn from different generations with the likes of William Mcillvanney, Chris Brookmyre, Don Paterson, Tom Leonard, Louise Welsh and Helen Fitzgerald appearing.

Festival director, and 24 year-old Cargo MD, Mark Buckland, said: “We’re absolutely delighted with this years lineup. It shows how strong the Scottish arts are right now.”

The Festival also boasts a remarkable commitment to new authors, with new student run magazine Octavius, award-winning Scottish literary magazine, Gutter, producing a show and other new authors including Allan Gillespie, Alan Wilson and Tracey S Rosenberg.

Poetry lovers equally enjoy a feast with three generations of great poets – in Don Paterson, Tom Leonard and William Letford – performing on Saturday.

“We tried to create a festival that not only has something for everyone but also one that showcases how much is going on in the underground scene right now,” said Buckland. “In what is an exceptionally difficult financial climate, many publishers and writers are embracing the live circuit much more.”

The official media partner of Margins is the Edinburgh-based The List magazine.

The festival beigins on Friday with sessions with crime authors Louise Welsh and Chris Brookmyre, new writing events and music from former Idlewild frontman, Roddy Woomble, and rising stars of folk and indie, Alasdair Roberts and Withered Hand.

Saturday includes a packed lineup with everything from Sky Sports pundit Graham Hunter discussing his new book on FC Barcelona to a book launch of a new charity collection, A Thousand Cranes, with a foreword by First Minister, Alex Salmond.

Sunday boasts a unique event in a read through of Alasdair Gray’s acclaimed play Fleck at the main auditorium in Oran Mor, designed and painted by Gray himself.

It will feature writers and actors, including Chiew Siah-Tei, Zoe Strachan and Professor Carl MacDougall.

Tickets are on sale now and Buckland is excited about the buzz around the festival.

“Last year, we put Margins together to test the ideas with Liz Lochead, Tom Leonard and several bands and it was a great success,” he said. “We feel this year is about as exciting as it gets and we’re really looking forward to it.”

Tickets are available from The Arches (0141 565 1035) and music event tickets are also available from TicketWeb and TicketScotland. Events priced individually. Weekend pass available for £55
