ALLY McErlaine, the Texas guitarist, has been announced as Scot of the year 2011 by ScotsCare, the charity for Scots in London.
Ally was on the list in recognition of his remarkable recovery from a life-threatening brain haemorrhage and coming back with a European tour with Texas and new album, with band Red Sky July.
He was closely followed by Scottish actor, Karen Gillan, who is better known as Amy Pond in the Doctor Who series.
Gerry Rafferty, who was posthumously added to the list in recognition of his lasting musical legacy, was in third place and pushed Scottish First Minister, Alex Salmond, who was recently announced ‘Briton of the Year’ by The Times newspaper into fourth place.
Ally McErlaine said: “I was really surprised to be nominated amongst such great names and I’m even more surprised to have won. It is a great honour though to be recognised by a charity that does such great work for Scots in London.”
The full shortlist was:
- Karen Gillan: For her continued success defying time as Amy Pond in Doctor Who
- Andy Murray: For finishing the year on a high at No. 4 in the world
- Lynne Ramsey: For the critically acclaimed film, ‘Let’s Talk about Kevin’
- Gerry Rafferty (pPosthumous): For creating a timeless soundtrack
- Ally McErlaine: For his remarkable recovery to complete a European tour with Texas
- Alex Salmond: In recognition of his party’s election victory
ScotsCare chief executive, Willie Docherty, said: “Every year we ask for your Scot of the Year and this year in particular I think has highlighted the range and diversity of Scots talent. We have had nominations from politics, sports, music, acting and film making. I think Ally McErlaine is an excellent winner and would make Rabbie proud.”
ScotsCare is the charity for first and second generation Scots in London in need, hardship or distress. Voting was held through the ScotsCare site and Facebook page.
