LEADING lights from three of Scotland’s most prominent TV, radio and newspaper outlets will discuss Glasgow’s strong position in the UK media industry at a business breakfast talk in the city next week.
The ‘Glasgow Talks’ event, hosted by Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, will feature addresses by STV chief executive, Rob Woodward, Global Radio’s Scottish MD, Paul Cooney, and Andrew Harries, editor of The Scottish Sun.
The three industry leaders will give an insight into their individual business sectors, each offering an unique insider’s perspective of the print, radio and television environments, how they have had to adapt to the challenges of digital technology and the changes in advertising techniques and revenue generating models.
The Glasgow Talks event takes place at Glasgow’s Crowne Plaza Hotel on Wednesday, January 25 from 8am until 10am and is sponsored by Clydesdale Bank and the University of Glasgow Business School.
Ahead of the event, Woodward, said: “Digital technology presents numerous opportunities to engage with consumers on a whole new level and it’s central to our growth strategy at STV – we’re no longer a traditional broadcaster but a digital media company delivering content across multi platforms and engaging with our viewers via social media on a daily basis.
“We strive to be as innovative and creative as possible, generating new revenue streams and investing in key digital initiatives.
“There is a wealth of talent in Scotland and we are delighted to be part of Glasgow’s thriving creative media hub.”
Cooney, who in his role oversees Capital FM’s Scottish output, added: “I’m really looking forward to the Glasgow Talks event and discussing Glasgow’s proud position not only as Scotland’s media hub but as one of the key media hubs in the UK.
“I’m very keen to demonstrate to the business community the many opportunities Glasgow’s prominent position offers them and the potential benefits they can enjoy.
“Another key point will be underlining the importance of keeping up to speed with such a fast moving, ever changing and hugely influential industry – one which I have always been passionate about working in.”
And Harries, appointed The Scottish Sun editor in 2010, said: “I’m delighted to be given the opportunity to talk to Glasgow’s business community about the Scottish newspaper industry.
“The media landscape is evolving at an incredible rate, but I hope to show that traditional print media still has a pivotal role to play in our country’s future.”
Tickets for the event are available to both Chamber members and non-members.
Glasgow Chamber of Commerce chief executive, Stuart Patrick, said: “Glasgow is uniquely placed and is home to all the major TV, radio and newspaper companies in Scotland.
“Indeed, it is no accident that a significant amount of media activity is now concentrated in the media quarter along the River Clyde and the plan is for this cluster to grow.
“So this is a great chance for Glasgow businesses to learn of the changes taking place within the media sector and the many positive brand-building opportunities which new innovations can offer to firms.”
