NOT many will know what a game of korfball entails, but Edinburgh’s oldest and largest Korfball team took time out from winning matches to raise money for charity.
The club of 30 men and women held a fundraising race night in aid of Shelter Scotland, raising over £300 for the housing and homelessness charity.
During the event, various horse races were shown on television screens with team members and the public asked to sponsor a horse or jockey to be in with a chance of winning a prize donated by local businesses.
Says a spokesperson: “Korfball was founded in the Netherlands in 1902 and is now played in 57 countries. With similarities to netball and basketball, it is a mixed gender team sport consisting of eight players; four female and four male.”
Zoe Holliday of Edinburgh City Korfball Club, said:
“It was a great event. We got the opportunity to gather korfballers, our family, friends and local businesses for a very worthy cause.
“It’s nice for us to be able to give something back to the community and we hope that the money raised will help Shelter Scotland carry on its important work.
“We look forward to organising more fundraising events in aid of the charity.”

“I have to be honest, I’d never heard of korfball until the Edinburgh team contacted us. It sounds like a fantastic sport with a great following.
“We are very grateful to the korfball team for choosing to raise valuable funds for Shelter Scotland. Support and generosity like this enable us to offer vital services to those experiencing homelessness and housing problems.”
