ANOTHER 67,500 homes and businesses in 14 Scottish communities now have access to faster broadband, BT announced today.
They are the latest places to benefit from the roll-out of BT’s pioneering next generation broadband service delivered over copper lines. A complete list of the upgraded exchange areas can be found at the end of this release.
The BT investment makes available broadband speeds of up to 20 megabits per second (Mbps) – more than double the maximum speeds previously available to the majority of UK homes and businesses.
It is now available in more than 130 Scottish exchange areas and another 32 are earmarked for upgrades in the coming months. The new service is available on an open, wholesale basis to all companies providing broadband.
Brendan Dick, BT Scotland director, said: “This is an important step forward for these Scottish towns. Faster broadband can help businesses become more competitive and greatly improve the online services available to families, homeworkers and other internet users.
“By next Spring, almost 1.4 million Scottish homes and businesses will be served by an exchange that has been upgraded to deliver these higher speeds.”
This investment in the copper network is in addition to the £2.5 billion BT roll-out of super-fast fibre-based broadband, which is expected to bring even faster speeds to two-thirds of the UK by the end of 2015.
The latest locations to be upgraded for faster broadband over copper lines are: Carnoustie; Cupar; Glenrothes Central; Leven; North Berwick; Forres; Kemnay; Stonehaven; Glasgow Provanmill; Beith; Edinburgh Colinton; Denny; Kelso and Wishaw.
