FORMER Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling, is to give evidence to the Church of Scotland’s economics commission.
Mr Darling, who will testify tomorrow (August 24), is one of a number of experts and those who have direct experience of poverty to give evidence to the Special Commission on the Purpose of Economic Activity.
The Church of Scotland set up the commission following the Credit Crunch in 2008.
The 13-strong commission chaired by Professor Charles Munn will report to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in May 2012. Commission members come from a range of backgrounds and bring specific skills and interests to the group.
Rev Ian Galloway, convener of the Church and society Council of the Church of Scotland, said: “We are pleased to welcome Mr Darling, who was Chancellor during the financial crisis in 2008, to speak to the Economics Commission.
“We believe that the work of the Commission will be important in addressing such questions as to how bring about a new vision of what might be achievable in the economic, social and community life of the nation, and how to link values such as justice, cohesion and sustainability to economic success.”
