Media Release: Law Society to host event for firms looking overseas

DUBAI or not Dubai – Law Society to host event for firms looking overseas

The Law Society of Scotland is hosting an event for Scottish legal firms looking to do business in the Middle East on Tuesday, 14 June.

Speakers from Scottish Development International, HBJ Gateley and Clyde & Co will examine opportunities for Scots law firms and how the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia are viewed as hubs for business in the region.

Alan Shanks, from HBJ Gateley, will talk about the firm’s experiences of setting up in Dubai and outline his perceptions of doing business as a Scot in the region.

Ben Gillespie and Lee Keane from Clyde & Co will outline the various methods of foreign direct investment and give their views on Dubai as a business hub.

The event is being held in advance of the International Bar Association Conference in Dubai in October this year.

Says a spokesperson: “The Society is planning to host an event at the Dubai Conference Centre to act as a focus for its members who will be going out to the IBA Conference as delegates and for those who already work in the region who are planning to attend the conference.”

Lorna Jack, chief executive of the Law Society of Scotland, said: “There are numerous business opportunities for Scottish solicitors and law firms in the Middle East. We want to be able to promote the expertise and skills of our members to an international audience in addition to exploring what additional opportunities there are and creating closer connections with those of our members who are already based there.

“The creation of the Scottish Arbitration Centre, the new centre which can act as an international hub for dispute resolution, adds to the platform on which to promote what our legal profession can offer.”
