Media Release: Champion sausage roll maker feeds 5,000

THE UK’s reigning Champion Sausage Roll Maker, Rory Macdonald of Macdonald Bros Butchers in Pitlochry, will be praying for some divine assistance this weekend as he takes on the feat of feeding 5,000 cyclists their breakfast at the Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia event which takes place on Sunday 15th May.

This breakfast of kings will be served up at the highest point on the course, close to the top of Schiehallion, and has seen the award-winning butcher and his trusted team take on a mammoth operation involving no less than 350kg of prime Aberdeenshire pork from seven pigs, and 320 metres of puff pastry, to create over 4,000 sausage rolls for the budding cycling champions.

Rory commented: “There has been a team of five of us working on this task to make sure there are plenty of fresh, award-winning sausage rolls available to the 5,000 hungry participants on the day.”

The champion sausage roll maker will get the opportunity to sample his works first hand as he too will be participating in the event, something which he has done every year since it was launched in 2007.

“By the time you get to the top of the mountain, your legs have done a lot of hard work and it’s essential to replenish some of those calories and refuel for the next stage of the 81-mile journey – the sausage roll is the perfect pick me up.”

Rory will not be the only champion to indulge in his award-winning creation.

Legendary cyclist, Graeme Obree, will also be seen tucking in to a hearty Scottish breakfast, alongside members of the British Alpine Ski team.

Rick Millin and Jo Louden, who tied the knot on the start line of the event at 6am that very morning, will also indulge in Rory’s award winning sausage roll as their ‘wedding breakfast’ – albeit probably not together since the groom is expected to reach the summit of Schiehallion long before the bride.

Amy Whiteley, IMG Challenger World, said: “Rory’s sausage rolls are legendary in the area, and are confirmed as the very best in the whole of the UK. We couldn’t think of a better way to refresh our participants at the top of the mountain.”

Vegetarians needn’t worry, however, as organisers have also laid on a smorgasbord of bananas and flapjacks just for them.
