TO avoid risking legal action over the content on social media, a leading social media expert is advising local businesses on how…
Gary Ennis, of Hillington based e-commerce company NSDesign, has worked with over 1,000 businesses throughout the UK to providing expert advice and guidance on conducting effective online communications.
Gary said: “Social media is still a relatively new phenomenon, and whilst it gives businesses a fantastic opportunity to develop communications, it can result in serious legal difficulties if used incorrectly.”
Gary recommends that businesses should embrace social media, and, in doing so, should follow five simple points to ensure good practice.
Recommendation one: “Treat social media as a public space. If you would not say something in a business meeting or in an interview with a journalist, don’t say it online.”
Recommendation two: “Encourage all employees to get involved, but first of all ensure you have a social media policy which explains the key ‘do’s and don’ts’ for good practice.”
Recommendation three: “Even if you don’t intend to use social networking tools at the moment, secure your business name and other trademarks on all the popular platforms – before somebody else does.”
Recommendation four: “Don’t overreact to negative comments. If in doubt, leave it out.”
Recommendation five: “You can never know too much about social media – consider specialist training and look for available grants and support from local councils.”
