ESPC celebrates its 40th birthday on Thursday 24th March and will mark the commemorative date with a series of celebrations in their George Street showroom as well as hosting a 70’s Party to raise money for Breast Cancer Care.
The celebrations have sparked a trip down memory lane for staff, member firms, ex-directors and members of the public alike.
It remains to be seen whether the founding solicitors understood the impact that the establishment of the Edinburgh Solicitors Property Centre would have on the property market or could have imagined the way in which searching for a new home has changed in this time.
Malcolm Cannon, chief executive, comments: “This is an exciting time in ESPC’s history and it has been entertaining to reflect on the way the property market has changed over the past 40 years.
“For example, 40 years ago property details were typed sheets kept in loose-leaf folders and how much a house hunter can do online or on a phone would have been unimaginable at the time.
“It was a simple idea from within the legal community that the collective would be far stronger than the sum of its parts that lead to the creation of ESPC.
“I believe this vision remains. It is very rare to find someone in East Central Scotland who has at some point in time not used our services in some way.
“While much of our historical data was accidentally shredded, we do know that since 1997, ESPC has helped sell over 206,000 homes for a combined value of £28billion, all across East Central Scotland.”
In February, ESPC appealed for information from buyers and sellers from 1971 as their records from that era had been destroyed.
They were pleased with the public response and even more enthused by one lady who had meticulously kept notes of the properties she viewed during her search in early 1971.
She generously leant her notebook to ESPC in order that they could conduct some comparisons and it proved fascinating reading.
It would appear that even with the step back in time the same issues still remain when searching for a new home!
Comments included: “Old-fashioned rubbish. They must be joking. They were leaving the 30 year-old cooker. Big deal!”
Fortunately, she did go on to find the right house for her and is still living there in 2011.
Join ESPC in their showroom at 85 George Street, Edinburgh, EH2 3DF for cake and celebrations and look out for the special edition of The ESPC Paper which features more interesting insights into the afore mentioned notebooks and a look into ESPC’s youth.
