ORGANISERS have described the Under 21s Women’s Euro-Hockey Championship held at The Peak in Stirling Sports Village earlier this year as a huge success for the surrounding community.
Begins a spokesperson: “Spectators at the event were encouraged to complete a survey based on their experience of the tournament and Stirling and the results reveal that over and 90 per cent rated their overall experience as ‘extremely positive’. Almost 100 people took part in the survey with over 70 per cent rating the Championship as the reason for their visit.”
Adds Ben O’Connell, performance sport manager, Stirling Sports Village: “The main drive behind bringing the hockey championships to Stirling was to create a lasting impact on the community and to try and involve them in both hockey and other sports.
“Several players from the Scotland squad delivered coaching sessions to around 30 junior club players across Stirling and this was followed up with sessions with the national team coach.”
Lindsay Campbell, Active Stirling’s hockey development officer, said: “All the feedback we’ve had from the kids who participated in the coaching sessions have been fantastic, they loved it.
“The Scotland players were very enthusiastic and an inspiration to the youngsters, it’s clearly given the local kids a boost and the opportunity to learn and play with professional athletes.
“We also organised an indoor tournament to give the local hockey clubs the chance to compete against the Scotland team.
“Fifty young players took part in the tournament supported by volunteers from the clubs and Active Stirling.
Lindsay continued: “The whole event has been a tremendous success for the community and the survey results again have revealed that it’s encouraged over 70 per cent of the spectators to take part in hockey or other sports activities, this is exactly the impact we hoped for.”
The Peak experience was also included in the spectator’s survey, with over 90 per cent rating the Stirling Sports Village as ‘outstanding’.
Stirling Council also provided a civic reception for players and coaching staff prior to the Championship kick off and the Stirling Provost, Fergus Wood stayed to watch the final game and award the medals and prizes to the winners.
