MINISTER for Enterprise, Energy and Tourism, Jim Mather MSP, is hosting a Sustainment of Fife Businesses event next week, 28th February, for Fife’s employment agencies.
The event will discuss the issues of tackling young unemployment and helping people into self-employment.
It follows a debate in the Scottish Parliament in November which praised the success of West Fife Enterprise in Valleyfield.
Supporting young people is a high priority for Fife’s employability agencies.
While decreasing opportunities and growing unemployment figures have had a negative impact on aspirations and expectations, it is essential this group do not become disenfranchised.
They must be encouraged to see their place in society as worthwhile, and be offered the opportunity to become a benefit to the business community.
Fife has highly developed and joined-up systems in place for engaging with and supporting young people into employment, training or further education.
Working in partnership has allowed for joint funding, collaborative working, and integrated support to enable this group of society to realise their potential.
Building on what Fife has achieved, Jim Mather will initiate discussion through a mind-mapping exercise to further improve the firm base already in place and focus on opportunities for young people in business.
Councillor Tony Martin, chair of Environment, Enterprise & Transportation Committee said: “By developing a Culture of Enterprise and supporting young people through the Get Ready for Work programme and the More Choices More Chances (MCMC) Partnership we are engaging with our school leavers and disengaged 15 to 17 year-olds, to help them develop in a supportive environment.
This event should build on what Fife has already achieved and provide a platform to analyse youngsters expectations so we can to help them to increase their moral and economic worth.”
Among the agencies attending are representatives from Fife Council, West Fife Enterprise, FSB Fife, Business Gateway, Opportunities Fife, Fife’s colleges, Skills Development Scotland, CVS Fife, Fife Chamber and BRAG.
