Media Release: Guild announces new national convener

AT the February meeting of the Church of Scotland Guild’s national executive committee, it was announced that Alison Angus, from Lochcarron and Skye, is to be the incoming national convener of the Guild.

Alison was born and educated in Glasgow and trained as a teacher at Jordanhill College. She lived for many years in Aberdeen, and was ordained as an elder in Cults.

Married with three daughters and five grandchildren, Alison moved to Lochcarron with her husband when she took early retirement as head of geography at Dyce Academy.

A former Guild Council convener, Alison was convener of the Guild’s Marketing and Publicity committee before becoming vice-convener last year.

Alison has an interest in hill walking and sailing, passing her interests in outdoor pursuits on to young people via her church youth work and Scripture Union.

Alison is currently a trustee on the management committee of COOL (Christian Outlook on Lochalsh) which supports an interdenominational youth worker working in the churches and schools.

Commenting on her appointment, Alison said: “I am deeply touched and humbled by the trust being placed in me by the Guild and shall seek, with God’s help, to serve it faithfully.

“The Guild is an inspiration to all in the church and I feel greatly honoured and privileged to have been invited to serve it in this way.”

At the same meeting, Mary Ford from Glasgow North was elected as national vice-convener.

Mary was born and brought up in Glasgow. Married to Alan, minister at Springburn, they have two daughters and two grandchildren. Mary was a bank teller until taking early retirement and now works part-time for Crossreach in the Glasgow Day Opportunities service.

Mary is a former council convener and is currently the convener of finance and general purposes committee. Mary likes reading, walking and visits to the gym. She also likes to keep up with family and friends on Facebook.

Alison and Mary will take up their posts following the General Assembly in May 2011.
