ONE of Highland Scotland’s best-loved restaurants is taking an exciting new direction this year.
After three years in the atmospheric halls of the old Rothiemurchus School House, Ord Bán’s owner, Polly Dean, and her husband, Ross, are taking the popular café-restaurant on the road.
Says a spokesperson: “Their vision is to host Ord Bán’s iconic supper club at some of the most grand houses and beautiful locations in the Cairngorms National Park and Spey Valley, an area once described by Sir David Attenborough as ‘one of the glories of wild Scotland’.
“The first ‘mobile’ supper club will be held in the grand Victorian setting of Inshriach House, located four miles from Aviemore, on March 29.
“From the exterior, Inshriach House embraces every essence of surrounding Highland beauty while its interior provides the relaxed intimacy that will perfectly compliment the ambience of Ord Ban’s supper club.”
On the move, Polly said: “We have loved our time at the school house but the time is right to move on and give our customers the chance to enjoy a new dining experience in some of the area’s most inspiring settings. The idea is that people will never know where Ord Ban will ‘pop up’ next – it’s all very mysterious and exciting!”
The couple are also keen to follow in the footsteps of the Mongolian nomads by investing in a Yurt, which is a portable, felt-covered, wood lattice-framed dwelling structure.
What better way to fully experience Ord Ban’s indigenous cuisine than seated in a Yurt by the River Spey or in sight of the picturesque Cairngorms?
One of the restaurant’s most loyal and famous customers is television presenter, Aggie MacKenzie, who fronts Channel 4’s ‘How Clean Is Your House’ with Kim Woodburn.
Aggie, who was one of those who enjoyed the festivities at Ord Ban’s Hogmanay party to welcome in 2011, said: “Polly and Ross have seriously raised the bar on the Strathspey and Badenoch food front. I’m so sad they are leaving my old school – what a hard act to follow – but very relieved to hear they’re not going far.
“Looking forward to hearing where they’ll be popping up over the year, and I for one will be a dedicated follower. I wish them the very best in their new adventure.”
Ord Ban prides itself on offering the very finest dishes prepared using fresh, local produce. Some of the mouthwatering dishes on offer at the supper club include
Ord Ban ham and eggs with gherkins and toast (smoked ham hough terrine with a deep fried soft poached egg) salad of hot smoked salmon, roast beetroot and shaved parmesan haunch of Rothiemurchus venison, celeriac puree braised red cabbage and chestnuts.
Of course, to accompany such fine dishes the restaurant also offers a plethora or world wines, a great selection of top shelf local malts and fine spirits.
For the time being the Ord Bán team is focussing on the final supper clubs within the walls of the old school building. The final Highland fling at Rothiemurchus will be on Sunday, January 16 and, perhaps unsurprisingly, the event is a sell out.
