CHILDREN using the free coach service to attend Perth Light Night, a celebration of the town’s 800-year history, are to be issued with free fluorescent bracelets to keep them safe this winter.
Says a spokesperson: “Official UK government figures reveal that children are more at risk of being involved in road accidents from 3pm onwards during the winter months, especially if they are not wearing high visibility clothing.”
In an attempt to help reduce the risks the Coupar Angus-based Smith & Sons Coaches, one of Scotland’s leading independent coach companies, is spearheading a safety campaign highlighting the dangers to children and adults of appearing invisible to other road users in the dark.
“As professional drivers, we understand only too well the dangers of pedestrians wearing dark clothing and suddenly appearing in the headlights of a vehicle on a dark road,” said Ian Smith, of Smith & Sons Coaches.
“A simple reflective armband or light clothing can make a major difference and potentially save lives. That’s why we are very happy to give away these fluorescent bracelets and the Perth Light Night festival is an ideal opportunity to reach as many people as possible.”
Up to 30,000 people are expected to turn up to finale of the town’s 800th celebrations and marvel at the spectacular light trail which will lead all the way from Kirk to Castle. Iconic Perthshire buildings such as St John’s Kirk, Perth Concert Hall, Perth Museum and Art Gallery and AK Bell Library will be illuminated for the evening.
The event, on Friday 26th November, marks the end of a year-long celebration to commemorate the granting of the Royal Burgh Charter to Perth by King William the Lion in 1210. It will culminate in a spectacular river-based pyrotechnic display starting at 9pm when fireworks will be launched from pontoons moored on the water of the River Tay.
Free buses, supplied by Smith & Sons Coaches, will run from Broxden Park and Ride to Mill Street in the city centre all evening.
“We want as many people as possible to enjoy Light Night safely, especially the kids,” said Ian F Smith from Smith & Sons Coaches.
“As it’s a free event we decided to get in the spirit of things and offer our services at no charge while at the same time promoting safety for all.”
