MORE than 30,000 people are expected to descend on Perth City Centre this coming weekend for the Light Night Perth Celebrations on 26th November.
In a bid to beat congestion, caused by increased traffic and the closure of several roads, and to help provide safe and convenient transport in and out of the city, Smith & Sons Coaches are laying on free buses for the duration of the evening.
Complimentary transport will run from the Broxden Park + Ride to Mill Street in the city centre from 4.30pm to 10pm on Friday 26th November.
All those who take advantage of the free rides on this route will also receive reflective bracelets and necklaces to wear at the Light Night festival and to promote road safety for pedestrians during the long, dark winter nights.
“It’s going to be a great night and as a local company I am delighted that we could help by laying on our buses for free. We are very proud of our Perthshire links,” said Ian Smith from Smith & Sons Coaches.
“It is also an ideal opportunity to promote the idea of safety, especially among youngsters and families during the dark nights this winter. We will be giving away high visibility reflective slap bracelets which can be used by both children and adults.”
Light Night is the grand finale of the year long Perth 800 celebrations which mark the 800th anniversary of the granting of the Royal Burgh Charter to Perth by King William the Lion in 1210.
The granting of this title, Royal Burgh Charter, was considered the official ‘founding’ of Perth as a town.
Over the year, the town has hosted events to celebrate this anniversary but Light Night promises to be the most spectacular. Several ‘light zones’ around the city centre will tell the story of Perthshire Past, Present and Future.
A light and audio show at St John’s Kirk, St. John’s Place, will tell the story of Perth from its origins 800 years ago to the present day and will include the River Tay changing colour during an incredible light and sound show with Perth Youth Orchestra between Perth and Queen’s Bridges.
There will also be a spectacular river-based fireworks display starting at 9pm on Friday when fireworks will be launched from pontoons moored on the water.
Tay Street will be closed to traffic so crowds can enjoy the show and an interactive light display will shine from Perth Concert Hall onto the Plaza outside. The lights will react to movements as people walk, run and jump underneath them.
Other iconic Perth buildings such as St Perth Museum and Art Gallery, St Matthew’s Church, AK Bell Library and St John’s Shopping Centre will also be illuminated for the evening.
In addition, a fabulous weekend of entertainment is planned including art installations, medieval markets and music, a travelling gallery, dance acts, storytelling and dramatic historic walks. Local restaurants and retailers will be staying open late on Friday 26 November, with many promoting Light Night special offers for customers.
