A POPULAR restaurant famous for serving up top quality log fired pizzas to Italian food lovers across Edinburgh, has been named as the UK’s best pizza restaurant.
La Favorita, on Leith Walk, impressed the judges of this year’s Pizza, Pasta and Italian Food Association (PAPA) Awards to scoop the prestigious Independent Platinum Award for Pizza Restaurant of the Year.
The restaurant fought off stiff competition from other popular pizzerias across the UK at the PAPA award ceremony in London, including previous platinum award winners, Tamburino in Yeovil and Glasgow’s Bar Napoli.
The latest accolade comes just weeks after the restaurant won a second prestigious AA Rosette award. In 2009, it became the first pizzeria in the UK to be awarded a rosette rating by the AA.
Tony Crolla, owner of La Favorita, said: “We are absolutely delighted to win this PAPA award. We have always known our pizzas are not only the best in Scotland, but also the rest of the UK – and now we have a top industry accolade that recognises this.
“What makes our pizzas special is the way in which they are cooked. We use traditional log fired ovens to create an authentic taste and all our ingredients are of the highest possible quality.
“We offer a wide range of toppings, including prawn, salmon, monkfish and buffalo mozzarella, to ensure that there is always something for everyone on our menu.
“Customer service is also key, and all of our staff are fully trained in customer care and food handling – to ensure that the whole dining experience at La Favorita is nothing other than excellent.”
The pizzeria also provides an award winning home delivery service, using a fleet of minis and magnetic plate pizza bag technology to ensure their pizzas are delivered fresh to customers across Edinburgh and the Lothians.
In 2008 and 2009, La Favorita won the platinum award at the PAPA Awards for Best Independent Delivery Service as well as winning the Independent Pizza Restaurant of the Year in 2005 and 2007. Tony Crolla was also named Pizza Designer of the Year in 2005, for his fishy pizza, ‘Favorita’, which features ingredients such as smoked salmon, caviar, crème fraiche and lemon rind.
The PAPA Awards, which are now in their 22nd year, were attended by more than 440 leading figures from across the UK’s pizza, pasta and Italian food industry.
PAPA director, Jim Winship, said: “These awards are well established and aim to recognise the work being done by restaurants, supermarkets and suppliers to keep raising standards.
“We have certainly seen a significant improvement in standards in recent years which is not only good for the industry but also for consumers.”
