SECONDARY schools in the Birmingham area are to be given the chance to win £30,000 worth of state-of-the-art computer equipment in a new city-wide competition.
Says a spokesperson: “In a competition launched today, leading technology companies IT247, Gateway, Hitachi Data Solutions and Microsoft have joined together to offer the prize, which will see one lucky school enjoy the benefits of brand new IT equipment, software and expert support as it heads into 2011.
“The organisers, who will unveil the winner at a ceremony in December, plan to award the grant to the institution that impresses them most with its plans to put the new kit to best use over the coming years.”
Said Lisa Ergun, sales manager for IT247: “This is a fantastic opportunity for a deserving Birmingham school to completely renovate their existing IT equipment and provide pupils with the benefits of cutting-edge computing.
“There are no strict guidelines around what will constitute a winning entry.
“The winner could either be a school that desperately needs to overhaul its ageing equipment or it could be somewhere with some exciting new ideas on how to use technology in innovative and engaging ways.”
Area secondary schools will receive a letter within the next few weeks asking them to fill in the details of their current IT infrastructure and indicate in less than 200 words why they are best candidate to win the £30,000 prize. Entries must be received by the closing date of November 14 and the winner will be announced at a special forum on December 1 by a VIP guest speaker.
Ergun added: “Set against a backdrop of budget cuts in which many schools are struggling and given the importance of IT in this day and age, we’re delighted to give at least one local secondary school the support it needs to dramatically strengthen the IT resources it can call on to provide pupils with the best possible start in life.”
