ENTERTAINMENT retailer, HMV, has conducted a snap poll among its facebook users in tribute to Hollywood icon, Tony Curtis, who sadly passed away.
Begins a spokesperson: “People were asked to nominate their favourite film or TV programme featuring the legendary actor, and it comes as no surprise that their overwhelming preferred choice was the 1959 Billy Wilder classic Some Like it Hot in which Curtis played the multiple roles of ‘Joe’, ‘Josephine’ and ‘Shell Oil’ Junior’.
“Over two-thirds of the votes cast went to the film, which co-starred Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe, in equally memorable roles.”
Second most popular was the powerful 1957 drama, The Sweet Smell of Success, in which Curtis played an unscrupulous New York press agent, followed by the kitsch 1970s TV series, The Persuaders, co-starring Roger Moore. Making up the rest of the top five are Stanley Kubrick’s 1960 epic Spartacus, in which Curtis played the slave Antoninus to Laurence Olivier’s Crassus, and the 1969 comedy caper, Monte Carlo or Bust.
Whenever a music or film icon dies, interest in their most celebrated work can increase significantly, and HMV expects demand for the DVD of Some Like It Hot to rise substantially.
Top five Tony Curtis films (source HMV facebook users, 30 Sep 2010).
1. Some Like it Hot (69.2 per cent)
2. Sweet Smell of Success (15.4 per cent)
3. The Persuaders ( 8.8 per cent)
4. Spartacus ( 5.1 per cent)
5. Monte Carlo or Bust! ( 1.5 per cent)
HMV’s head of social media, Matt Potter, comments: “Tony Curtis is one of the last, true greats from Hollywood’s golden era. He may not have been as prolific as some of his contemporaries in his acting, but he appeared in some of our most-loved films, and his dual portrayal of Joe/Josephine in Some Like It Hot is one of the memorable roles in film comedy.
“It’s no surprise that so many of us love this film and cherish his performance in it.”
