THE annual search to identify and celebrate Scotland’s greatest achievements has been launched today. The long list for Scotland’s greatest sporting moment has been unveiled, the list will be whittled down through public voting and the winner will be announced to mark St Andrew’s Day 2010.
Formulae One supremo, David Coulthard, said: “Scotland has a deep and varied tradition of sporting success from curling to motorsport. For a small nation, I think we have a great number of respected world class athletes and certainly some amazing sporting moments to choose from.”
Scottish TV presenter, Lorraine Kelly, said: “For me it was Dundee United’s Kevin Gallagher scoring against Barcelona at Tannadice in the1987 UEFA cup!! Also Chris Hoy too!”
Scottish Rugby star Kenny Logan, who owns Logan Sports Marketing and Klass International, saidL “Scotland has had many great sporting achievements and there have certainly been some fantastic moments that have got our nation off their couches, punching the air in glee: The 1990 Grand Slam, 1999 Six Nations Championship, Andy Murray, Chris Hoy, the list goes on…”
TV presenter, Kirsty Gallacher, said: “I have many fond memories of great Scottish sporting moments, there a just too many to choose from! I am sure people will have lots of fun reliving the moments as they try to pick their favourite.”
Charity chief executive, Willie Docherty, said: “It seems apt to celebrate Scotland’s sporting prowess with Glasgow’s hosting of the Commonwealth Games ‘just around the corner’. The Games are bound to provide not only great sporting moments for Scots but also in Scotland.”
The long list includes;
Ken Buchanan beating Ismael Laguna to become world light weight champion in 1970.
Billie McNeill lifting the cup as Celtic becoming the first British team to win the European Cup in 1967.
Archie Gemmil’s World Cup goal against Holland in 1978.
David Sole’s slow walk out against England in 1990 as Scotland go on to a Five Nations Grand Slam.
Chris Hoy’s 3rd gold medal win in 2008 Olympic Games.
Eric Lidddell’s passing the line to wine 400m gold at the 1924 Olympics.
Scotland’s final goal to beat England 3-2 at Wembley in 1967.
Jocky Wilson’s dart World Championship win in 1989 against Eric Bristow.
Stephen Hendry’s winning his un-equaled 7th World Snooker title.
Rangers winning the 1972 Cup Winners’ Cup.
Liz McColgan winning gold in the 1991 world championships in Tokyo in the 10,000 metres.
Scotland’s women win curling gold for the UK at the 2002 winter Olympics.
Jackie Stewart becoming world F1 champion for the first time in 1969: here.
Colin MaCrae becoming World Rally Champion for the first time in 1995.
Allan Wells 100m Gold at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
This is the charity’s fourth year of celebrating Scotland’ greatest achievements.
A search for Scotland’s greatest comedy moment was won by David Tenant’s sketch with Catherine Tate for Comic Relief.
A search for Scotland’s favourite song was won by RunRig with their anthem, Loch Lomond; Lulu presented the band with a commerative disc at a concert in London.
Last year, the search for Scotland’s greatest contribution to the world saw Penicillin take the crown, beating Irn Bru, television and Lorne Sausage.
