ABERDEEN businesses are gearing up for a major review of Britain’s health and safety culture.
Says a spokesperson: “The review will investigate the growth of a compensation culture in this country and recommend ways in which work place safety can regain public respect.
“Some businesses have already begun tackling their own company’s safety culture ahead of the review findings.
“Absurd examples of rules imposed in the name of health and safety have discredited work place safety – children being banned from making daisy chains in case they get germs.
“Prime Minister, David Cameron. has tasked Lord Young of Graffham with suggesting solutions to redress the balance and inject some common sense into the workplace.”
One leading Aberdeen consultancy is warning that it sometimes takes an accident for some companies to recognise the crucial importance of health and safety at work.
Michael Freeman, technical director of Huntly Street-based Facilitators Quality Management (FQM) claims many firms dismiss the legislation as a costly nuisance instead of a vital way of making their workplace safe and protecting their workers’ lives.
“It’s tragic if people have to wait until there is a fatality in their company to realise the importance of health and safety.
“Some businesses are ignorant about the legislation and don’t understand that it’s about saving the lives of their staff” he adds.
FQM, part of Facilitators International LLP, says its crucial companies are prepared for the changes which the review will bring and are geared up to re-examining their health and safety policies.
