TODAY, Shelter Scotland is calling on the Scottish Government to support the building of more affordable homes in Lochaber.
Says a spokesperson: “This plea is being made in partnership with The Highland Council and Lochaber Housing Association.
“The organisations will be campaigning together all day in Cameron Square for local people to sign a petition to put pressure on the Government to ensure housing becomes a priority.”
Graeme Brown, director, Shelter Scotland, housing and homelessness charity, said:
“Because everyone needs a home, we need to make housing a national priority for the Scottish Government’s upcoming budget. The people in the local area want building more affordable homes, protecting and refurbishing those we already have and preventing homelessness to be at the heart of the political agenda.
“We are delighted The Highland Council and Lochaber Housing Association are working with us to help generate support for our call to build more affordable homes in the local area and across Scotland.
“In the Highland area there are over 9,000 households stuck on the Highland Housing Register, but there is a dire shortage of homes available.
“We urge everyone in Lochaber to come down and support our campaign.”
Blair Allan, chief executive, Lochaber Housing Association, said:
“Our overall aim is to provide suitable housing to address local housing needs. We pride ourselves in developing good quality, affordable housing for local people.
“We are making a joint effort with Shelter Scotland to raise awareness of the need for more affordable housing and we are calling on local residents to back our campaign.”
Lochaber Housing Association’s AGM is also taking place today at Caol Community Centre at 6.30pm, where Graeme Brown will be a guest speaker.
