Media Release: Getting wild about wood and crazy about craft at Big Tent Festival

TRADITIONAL wood and crafting skills will be on show at this year’s Big Tent, recognised as Scotland’s leading Green festival indicating that Scotland’s forest and wood culture is alive and well.

At the entrance to the Big Tent visitors will find the amazing Wood and Craft Zone where they can take time to wander and enjoy the talents of craft workers in many mediums: meet the makers, listen to a talk or music in the Big Yurt or even try their hand at learning a new craft.

In the Wood and Craft Pavilion and Courtyard, there will be displays and demonstrations of work by some of Scotland’s finest designers and makers including furniture, wood turning, basket making, textiles, metal, ceramics and printing with plant dyes.

In The Big Yurt there’s a programme of talks and discussions on topics including 21st century woodlands, Food from the forest and ‘Useful and beautiful? Sustaining Craft in the 21st Century’.  In addition several of the makers will be talking about their creative process.

The specially commissioned SEDA cabin, designed and built on-site by David Blair, is a practical and inspirational demonstration of sustainable ecological design in wood. Inside, there will be displays and talks on eco-renovation and designing new ‘Green’ homes.

You can also meet members of Reforesting Scotland, Scottish Wild Harvest Association and Association of Scottish Hardwood Sawmillers, and find out about using wood fuel.

In the Falkland Centre for Stewardship tent (organisers of Big Tent), there’s an unique exhibition of new work inspired by the natural and built heritage of Falkland, plus work from an exhibition by the Past Present and Future Craft Practice team at Duncan of Jordanstone who have been researching the craft at the House of Falkland.

You will be able to book tours to the House of Falkland, a ‘hidden gem’ of a building with incredible arts and crafts interiors.

Other highlights include:

  • Roots and Flutes with Bob Pegg - sounds and stories of some of the world’s oldest musical instruments.
  • 21st century woodlands: seeding a better future with Fi Martinoga, Bernard Planterose, Rick Worrell with double L and Syd House.
  • Food from the forest with Emma Chapman on wild harvesting, Andrea Partridge on revitalising historic orchards, Alan Carter on permaculture, Tony Waterhouse on Sheep AND trees – why not? and Pete Ritchie of Whitmuir Organics in the chair.
  • Useful and beautiful? Sustaining craft in the 21st century – Past, Present, Future Craft Practice – Georgina Follett, jeweller and Professor of Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design will speak about Past, Present and Future Craft Practice, Amanda Game, freelance curator will ask ‘What do we think is useful and beautiful in the 21st century’?, and Roger Hall, letter carver in wood, will give a personal perspective.
  • Woodland Roots – Henry Fosbrooke and the Woodland Roots Band on guitar, vocals, djembe, didge, bass, pipes and more.
  • Meet the makers – Ten-minute talks about their creative process from some of the craft workers exhibiting in the Falkland Centre for Stewardship Tent and the Crafts Pavilion.
  • Eco-renovation – where to start and how to go about renovating your home in an eco-friendly way.
  • Designing new ‘Green’ homes

Finally, visitors may choose to clear their head in the woods away from the hurly-burly of the festival, take a Falkland Estate Sound Walk or watch other activities in this wooded place with its forward looking approach to forest culture.

Paul Bush OBE, chief operating officer, EventScotland, said: “We are delighted to be supporting Big Tent again this year. Billed as ‘Scotland’s Green festival’, its stunning surroundings clearly demonstrate Scotland is the perfect stage for events, and in the year of food and drink is a great example of an event with a quality offering that promotes local Scottish produce.”

Falkland Centre for Stewardship has been working fruitfully with Reforesting Scotland, Scottish Furniture Makers Association, Community Woodlands Association, Scottish Ecological Design Association, Scottish Native Woods, Association of Scottish Hardwood Suppliers, Forestry Commission, Scottish Natural Heritage and Fife Coast and Countryside Trust to inspire hearts, hands and heads.

With less than two weeks until opening night, tickets and Big Green discounts are still available at www.bigtentfestival.co.uk
