IMG Mass Participation a division of IMG Worldwide, the premier global sports, media and entertainment company announced today that renowned adventurers James Cracknell and Ben Fogle will join the 5,000 participants in this Sunday’s Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia.
They will be joining amateur cycling enthusiasts from all over the U.K. as they head north to Pitlochry in Highland Perthshire to take on the gruelling 81-mile closed-road challenge in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
James Cracknell, a former Olympic rowing gold-medallist, and Ben Fogle, presenter of popular T.V series, Country Tracks and Country File, are well known as two of Britain’s most intrepid adventurers with a number of triumphs to their names including their 2009 race to the South Pole in the footsteps of Roald Amundsen and Captain Scott. Whilst Cracknell has had experience on his bike in past expeditions, this is Fogle’s first outing on the road.
With a total climb of 1,949 metres and 81 miles of lochs, mountains and spectacular scenery, the Etape Caledonia is bound to provide a tough challenge for both adventurers.
James Cracknell commented: “Ben and I are really looking forward to taking part in the Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia this weekend. We both enjoy cycling and have cycled extensively whilst in training for our various expeditions but we’re certainly no experts. That said, however, we normally get fairly competitive and I’m sure we will push each other to our limits in the battle to be first across the finish line on Sunday morning.”
Ben Fogle added: “This is the first time I have entered an event like this and it will be great to be a part of the atmosphere. From what I’ve seen, the route is absolutely stunning and cycling with 5,000 other people should be a brilliant experience but I’m slightly apprehensive about the total climb of nearly 2,000 metres! I’m sure I’ll enjoy the feeling of satisfaction when I cross the finish line, but only if I’ve managed to keep up with James over the previous 81 miles!”
