Media Release: Flying Scotsman, Obree, to lead Etape Caledonia 2010

SCOTTISH racing cyclist, Graeme Obree – nicknamed ‘The Flying Scotsman’ – will take the lead at this year’s Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia cycle challenge setting the pace for the 4,500 participants as he takes pole position at the start of the event.

Says a spokesperson: “Obree is a Scottish racing cyclist who twice broke the world hour record, in July 1993 and April 1994, and was the individual pursuit world champion in 1993 and 1995.

“He was known for his unusual riding positions and for the ‘Old Faithful’ bicycle he built. His life and exploits have been dramatised in the film, The Flying Scotsman, including his challenges with dealing with clinical depression.

“Recognition for Graeme Obree’s achievements have grown over the years and subsequently in December 2009, he was inducted into the British Cycling Hall of Fame.”

Obree commented: “I can’t wait to take part in this year’s Etape Caledonia and I’m especially looking forward to being first past the start line. Training so far has been good and I’m very excited about the opportunity to ride in Scotland in what is some of the most stunning scenery in the world.”

Tris Jones, biking events co-ordinator for Macmillan, said: “We are delighted that Graeme Obree is going to take the lead at the start of this year’s Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia.

“We have over 2,000 fundraisers participating in this year’s event and all of the money they raise will be used to fund our vital cancer services, ensuring we help the two million people in the UK who are currently affected by cancer.

“Graeme is an inspiration to so many cyclists; I am sure they will relish the opportunity to take part in the same event as this historic individual. ”

The event starts and finishes in Pitlochry, with host of attractions for spectators as well as riders.

Jo Dytch, IMG, said: “We’re hoping Graeme can set some new time records and be back in time to manage the prize giving – we’re sure he can do it!”

Etape Caledonia has firm support from Event Scotland and Perth and Kinross Council, attracting top sponsors such as Macmillan Cancer Support, Highland Spring, Adidas, Zipvit, The Times, Cycling Weekly, Perthshire, and Event Scotland.
