ATTENDEES at a free iSLI workshop are set to be shown how the effective management of intellectual property can help avoid some extremely damaging effects on businesses.
In a session hosted by the Institute for Systems Level Integration in Edinburgh, two leading experts in the field of Intellectual Property (IP) are to show an audience of business leaders, investors and product developers how careful management of their IP assets can both protect their organisations and help propel them forward.
A free half-day workshop designed to brief attendees on the key issues, delegates will leave the event equipped with an essential understanding of how to manage their intellectual assets more effectively.
“IP management is one of the key new business tools that 21st century organisations must master if they want to adequately protect the brands, goods, software or services they are responsible for. Introducing a system to track such matters doesn’t have to be expensive, complicated or time consuming, but there are many Scottish businesses out there who have encountered major problems because they failed to address the issue,” said European Patent Attorney, Michael Ellis, of Ellis IP.
Attendees will join Ellis and Elizabeth Vokurka – IP and innovation management expert at IP Innovation – as they introduce the concepts and issues associated with IP in developing innovative companies. In guiding a (fictional) start-up, the concepts of IP strategy management, IP ownership, IP protection and IP licensing, third party IP and commercialisation will be explored, allowing delegates to learn the basics of protecting and exploiting the IP in your company’s inventions, creative ideas and brands in this half day workshop.intellectual property

“Ideas, inventions and reputation are all valuable parts of innovative businesses and can be protected in a variety of ways. This introduction will be both appropriate and valuable for people and SMEs developing innovative or novel devices or producing innovative goods or services,” said Dr Mark Begbie, iSLI director.
The Value from Intellectual Property Management workshop will take place from 1.30pm – 5pm on 29th April 2010 at the iSLI building, Research Avenue North, Heriot-Watt University Research Park, Edinburgh EH14 4AP. Although the course is free to attend, places are limited and should be booked by contacting cpd@sli-institute.ac.uk.
