Media Release: Improving business know-how at local event

AN event which aims to give private and voluntary organisations the opportunity to share knowledge and gain a fresh understanding of each other’s sectors will be held next month (May).

The Business Know How Showcase event has been organised by Aberdeen Council of Voluntary Organisations (ACVO) in partnership with The Royal Bank of Scotland, the Aberdeenshire CVS Network and Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce, and is set to bring together around 200 delegates from local private and social businesses.

The event is open to organisations of all sizes from the private and third sectors, and will take place at Aberdeen Arts Centre on Thursday, May 27.

The aim and theme of the event is to identify action that both the private and voluntary sector can take in order to make the North-east ‘wealthier and fairer, healthier and greener, safer and stronger and smarter and prouder’.

Delegates attending the event will hear from Bob Collier, CEO of Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce, as well as taking part in workshops and discussions which will look at how individual organisations are contributing to the key issues being discussed.

The CEOs from both Bibby Offshore and Enterprise North East Trust (ENET) will also be taking part, whilst a session on ‘Growth Solutions’ will be delivered on the day by Space Solutions and Shepherd and Wedderburn LLP.

Ian Paterson, CEO of ACVO, said: “Everyone involved is extremely excited about this event. With a social economy breakfast, inspirational speakers, discussions, workshops and networking opportunities all on the agenda, the 2010 Business Know How Showcase event is set to provide a major step forward in the way that social businesses interact with the wider economy for the good of the community.

“The importance of bringing the private and charitable sectors together is huge. Independent voluntary organisations undoubtedly contribute immensely to the society which we all exist in, and these organisations can only continue to prosper with the business skills and expertise of those in the private sector.

“This event is a fantastic opportunity for both sectors to come together and realise the potential they have to help each other to thrive now and into the future.”

Bob Collier, CEO of AGCC, added: “Addressing the impact of the public sector deficit in the medium and long term is going to require the private and third sectors to think big and think together. AGCC recognises that the Business Know How programme is a valuable vehicle for making that happen.

“The Chamber will be delighted to contribute to the 2010 Business Know How Showcase event, highlighting our plans for developing, with ACVO and RBS, a joint agenda for supporting cross-sectoral exchange in the interests of finding new ways to achieve economic development and future prosperity.”

Duncan Sloan, head of Community Banking, The Royal Bank of Scotland, said: “At RBS, we believe that forging strong partnerships between the private, public and third sectors can play a vital role in helping to empower citizens and communities, and this spirit of collaboration is all the more important as we face up to a period of economic uncertainty.

“We also need to continually examine new ways of doing business in markets often not well served by the mainstream financial sector, helping to shape new ideas and business models and strengthen the capacity of those leaders at the forefront of delivering change.

“The 2010 Business Know How Showcase event will once again be a perfect opportunity to debate and explore the art of the possible.”

ACVO exists to represent, support and develop the third sector in Aberdeen City. It aims to foster and promote the sector’s role in the development of caring communities where individuals are enabled to achieve their full potential.
