Media Release: Holcombe releases first publication

ACADEMIC eBook publisher, Holcombe Publishing, has released its first publication, a book identifying how social systems shape current society.

Holcombe Publishing aims to provide academic books at affordable prices, as well as providing a platform for academic authors to distribute and sell their work.

Their first publication, “Systems, not People, Make Society Happen” written by Michael King, reveals how new ideas about society can change people’s understanding of everything that happens in the world. Social systems are involved everywhere, from political decisions, such as the invasion of Iraq, to the impact of technological innovations or even to common, daily events, such as falling in love or buying a faulty iPod. By questioning fundamental assumptions about what society and people are, it challenges claims that human beings are able to identify risks accurately and regulate behaviour to minimise the possibility of failure.
Michael King (http://www.holcombepublishing.com/authors/michael-king ) is a professor at the University of Reading, moving there in 2006 after previous work at Brunel University. Michael practised as a lawyer and held university appointments both in Europe and the USA. He has published widely on issues concerning law and society, and was keen to ensure that his latest book could reach as many readers as possible. “Systems, not People, Make Society Happen” is Michael’s sixth publication.
Colin Asquith, Holcombe Publishing’s Technical Director, said: “Holcombe Publishing was created with the aim of creating academic books which are both high quality and affordable. Many current academic books are expensive due to high publishing costs for low volumes, so starting with an eBook avoids us keeping our books out of the hands of interested readers.
“Part of the advantage in academic eBook publishing (http://www.holcombepublishing.com/about ) is cost, but also it allows us to create versions of our publications that can be read on many devices, from Amazon’s Kindle to the new iPad, we’re updating our technology to ensure that we can get our books to as many people as possible for prices they can afford.”
