YOUNG men from former coalfield communities in East Ayrshire can take their first step towards a new career in childcare by attending an Open Day at Yipworld.com on March 30.
Janice Hendry, development director with Yipworld.com, which will run the training programme, hopes the Men into Childcare Open Day will attract potential trainees with a real commitment to carving out a new career for themselves.
She said: “This event is not really for people who are only there because their mum told them they have to find a job or who have been pressured into attending.
“But there will be a lot of very valuable information for those who are genuinely interest in this exciting opportunity.”
The Open Day will consist of rolling presentations from 10.0am till 3.0pm during which Janice will spell out the workload involved in the year-long programme and the opportunities for further skills training or employment for those who stay the course.
The Open Day will also include a wealth of advice on the application process and coaching in interview skills.
The Men into Childcare programme will involve ten men in the16-25 age group and is intended to equip them for a career in primary school teaching, social work or nursing, where there are employment opportunities despite the recession.
Nicky Wilson, Scottish Trustee of the Coalfields Regeneration Trust which backed the project with a £50,000 grant said: “It is typical of Yipworld’s professional approach that they are running an event to ensure they get high calibre applicants, and to help those applicants prepare as fully as possible.
“We are confident this novel course will meet one of our primary objectives of helping people from former mining communities into jobs.”
The Leader programme is also providing £50,000 of funding for the course.
