FOLLOWING the HM Inspectorate of Education (HMIE) review of Stevenson College Edinburgh, the report published today highlights its key strengths of leadership, engagement with students and its high quality of learning and teaching.
Says a spokesperson: “The report commends the college’s performance against its educational aims, objectives and targets. The HMIE were also pleased with the college’s improvements in retention for all learners and attainment rates for students on higher education programmes over the last three years.
“The college’s self-evaluation process is also seen as a major strength which, together with the new teacher fellow role which promotes good practice, has led to clear outcomes and improvements to learning and teaching.
“The fair and equal treatment of our very diverse range of students and the support provided by staff to students are also praise.”
Brian Lister, principal and chief executive at Stevenson College Edinburgh, commented:
“I am pleased that HMIE has recognised the college’s robust planning and that our portfolio of programmes caters well for our wide range of learners, as well as the strong and supportive relationship our students have with our teaching staff. We will continue to work strenuously to improve attainment rates in all our provision.”
The spokesperson continued: The HMIE report identifies some examples of excellent and sector-leading practice at Stevenson College Edinburgh – in particular, a project to help students on the NQ TV and Broadcast Skills course understand realistic project costs and develop good freelance employability skills. Our business continuity processes – to deal with emergency situations and systems failures – were also recognised as excellent practice.”

The external review of Stevenson College Edinburgh by HMIE took place during the week beginning 9 November 2009. Learning and teaching and other important activities that impact on the quality of the learner experience were evaluated against the three key principles of high quality learning, learner engagement and quality culture, using the 17 reference quality indicators outlined in the External quality arrangements for Scotland’s colleges, September 2008.
Stevenson College Edinburgh celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2010. When the College opened in 1970 at the Sighthill Campus it had 3,000 students. Today, it is one of the largest colleges in Scotland with over 18,000 students, of which nearly 3,500 are full-time (2008/09 academic year) and over are 1,000 EU and international students.
