Media Release: Stars gang near to sing for their supper

CELEBRITIES are gearing up to pay tribute to the Bard at the 25th West Sound Burns Supper.

The Ayrshire-based radio station will host the event at the Thistle Hotel in Glasgow this Saturday, January 16th at 7pm.

The evening’s entertainment includes Burns’ songs from X Factor duo, the MacDonald Brothers, and Britain’s Got Talent classical singer, Faryl Smith. The teenage starlet, who recently toured with opera sensation Katherine Jenkins, will sing Ae Fond Kiss and John Anderson My Jo.

She said: “I’m really looking forward to singing at the supper. I always like performing new and challenging pieces, and the songs of Burns are unique. I can’t wait to sing them on the night.”

Also on the bill are comedy favourites from the hit sitcom, ‘Still Game’.

Actor Mark Cox, who plays tight-fisted Tam Mullen, will narrate the Toast To The Lassies, whilst his co-star, Jane McCarry, who plays busybody Isa, will narrate the Reply.

Brenda Ritchie, station director at West Sound, said: “We are thrilled to have so many talented and enthusiastic people at our 25th anniversary Burns Supper. It has always been a very popular event which is testimony to how beloved Burns is.

“I am really looking forward to the evening, and hope that everyone in attendance really enjoys themselves. I’m sure that is what Burns would have wanted!”

The night will also see performances from the winners of the Young Burnsian Competition, organised by the World Burns Federation.

Gifted piper Calum Brown, 10, from Peterculter, beat thousands of school pupils to the title of Junior Burnsian of the Year, and will play during the Supper.

Talented speaker Megan Mulgrew, 12, of Dumfries, who scooped the title of Young Burnsian of the Year, will address the haggis.

Mike Duguid, president of the Robert Burns Federation Ltd., said: “I would like to congratulate the young Burnsians on their achievements.

“It is hugely rewarding and heart warming to see the high standard being reached in these competitions and especially to witness the Scots language being promoted through the vibrant and enthusiastic performances of these young people, all of whom take great pride in their Scottish cultural heritage and in the works of Robert Burns in particular.

Notes to editors:

  • The first ever West Sound Radio Burns Supper was held in January 1986 and was organised as a one-off event marking the bicentenary of the Kilmarnock edition of poems. It proved to be much more popular than West Sound had anticipated and this year the occasion celebrates its 25th anniversary.
  • The Young Burnsian Competition is organised by the Robert Burns World Federation, the prize for which is the Rosebowl sponsored by West Sound, and the opportunity to play at the Burns Supper. Each year 165,000 school children enter this competition with the two winners being named Young Burnsian of the Year and Junior Burnsian of the Year.
