OVER 3,500 cyclists have signed up to take part in the 2010 Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia, and organisers have confirmed that entries for the event are selling over 130 per cent faster than in 2009.
The event, which is now in its fourth year, has grown in popularity every year since its inception. The 2009 event dominated the headlines in May this year when it was temporarily halted following a sabotage attempt by disgruntled protestors.
Despite these challenges, more cyclists than ever before have committed to take part in the 2010 event with advance registrations including backing from a number of high-profile teams such as the Royal Air Force and members of the British Alpine Ski Team.
IMG, organisers of the Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia, are buoyed by the news that entries are selling faster than ever and are predicting that in 2010, almost 5,000 cyclists will participate in the event, many of them raising vital funds for the Macmillan Cancer Support.
In 2009, Macmillian Cancer Support raised over £380,000 from their involvement with the event.
Ellie Whitfield, event co-ordinator at Macmillan Cancer Support, commented: “Following the staggering success of this year’s event, we are absolutely thrilled that 3000 places in the 2010 Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia have already been snapped up! It’s going be even bigger and better in 2010 so I would urge anyone thinking about taking part, to be quick and sign up to join Team Macmillan now!”
Jo Dytch, event organiser with IMG, said “We are delighted to see that Britain’s cyclists have come out in force to support the event in 2010 and we look forward to welcoming them all to Highland Perthshire in May 2010. Their fundraising efforts for Macmillan Cancer Support will also be greatly appreciated.
“We do, however, urge people interested in participating in next year’s challenge to register as soon as possible to ensure they guarantee their place.”
