TOURISM at Torosay Castle & Gardens on the Isle of Mull has flourished this summer, thanks to an increase in the number of American visitors keen to experience the baronial splendour of the castle.
Owner of Torosay Castle & Gardens, Chris James, said: “The love affair many American people have with Scotland has not been diminished in any way, of late.”
The castle, which is more than 150 years old, and its unique gardens. have long attracted visitors from both the UK and abroad. But this summer, owner Chris James, has noticed a rise in the number of Americans making the journey across ‘the Pond’ to sample a slice of historic island life.
Chris said: “Americans seemed determined to make Mull and Torosay their magical summer destination. In fact, this summer we have noticed an increase in the number of Americans coming over to Torosay to enjoy the castle and its gardens.
“Many of these people have been travelling on the Scottish mainland but were determined to make the trip over to the island to tour the castle. It has been lovely to meet them all and hear the positive things they have to say about the castle and its gardens, which flies in the face of the current media reports.”
Tristram Yarde-Leavett, managing director of Globus tours, said “We have been taking American tourists to Mull for the past 18 years and have seen no evidence of this backlash from the US over recent weeks. Americans love Scotland and visiting Torosay Castle and we do not expect this to change anytime soon.”

Torosay Castle was completed in 1858 by the eminent Architect David Bryce in the Scottish Baronial style. It is one of the finer examples of his work and possibly one of the few still used as a family home and open to the public. Torosay Castle & Gardens lies 1.5 miles from Craignure pier on the Craignure/Iona road. (Iona is 35 miles and Tobermory 23 miles). Caledonian MacBrayne ferries sail daily between Oban and Craignure.
