A PROTEST against recent terrorist attacks in Indonesia has attracted over 10,000 supporters via an online version of the ribbon and wristbands people wear to declare their support for a cause or a charity – designed by an Edinburgh company.
Web application developers, Storm Ideas, has created a Twitter version of the ribbons and wristbands commonly worn in support of charities such as Livestrong.
A ‘Twibbon’ simply comprises a small symbol that overlays the Twitter user’s logo, aka avatar.
Since the launch, earlier this month, of www.twibbon.com – hosting a wide selection of ‘Twibbons’ – there have been, in particular, over 10,000 downloads, worldwide, of a symbol protesting against recent terrorist bombings in Jakarta, in Indonesia.
Says Storm Idea’s Jonathan Joyce: “We’re amazed and absolutely delighted with the online community’s reaction to Twibbon. It’s an unique idea, and it’s caught on globally, which is exactly what we’d hoped for.”
Notes for editors:
1. Twibbon launched on Friday 17th July. Within just fifteen hours, ‘Twibbon’ was one of the top ten used terms on Twitter.
2. At time of going to press, almost 3,000 Twibbons have been created, reflecting protests, memorials, advertising campaigns, events, celebrity worship, product launches and brand allegiances. Over 70,000 Twitter users have employed a Twibbon to pledge support.
3. You can see a celebratory mosaic ‘Twibute’ to the 10,000 supporters of IndonesiaUnite campaign at http://twibbon.com/twibute/indonesiaunite
