J&E Shepherd Chartered Surveyors has appointed Wayne Kelly, an EPC assessment specialist, as a key part of its expansion of a dedicated commercial property Energy Performance Certificate service throughout Scotland.
Says a spokesperson: “An EPC is essentially a document which states the energy efficiency of a building showing carbon dioxide ratings in bandings from A to G, with A being the least polluting and G being the most. The performance of the building is then benchmarked against current building standards and cost effective improvements recommended.”
Mr Kelly said: “The aim of EPCs is to encourage building owners to reduce carbon emissions by classifying exactly how energy-efficient a building is and by recommending how such emissions might best be reduced.
“Whilst EPCs are now a legal requirement, we are seeking to go further than the provision of a minimum level of service to meet clients’ legal obligations. Rather, we are seeking to provide our clients with a value added service through the provision of a comprehensive energy audit too.
“That service ranges from relatively simple and straightforward EPCs for small companies through to highly complex and detailed analyses for major buildings, with Shepherds having recently undertaken work for clients such as Fife Council, Falkirk Council and the Crown Estate.”
Based in Shepherd’s Edinburgh office, Mr Kelly is a building surveyor who has worked in Scotland for the last 12 years and boasts extensive architecture and project management experience. He holds a Level 3 and 4 Diploma in Commercial Energy Assessment and is fully certified to provide energy-related advice from conception through to completion, including undertaking energy surveys post-occupation.

The provision of commercial property EPCs is something which, as a firm, we are devoting considerable resources towards. We believe Shepherd’s is delivering a quality and breadth of EPC service not readily available elsewhere in Scotland.”
Added the spokesperson: “With official figures estimating that buildings are responsible for around 50 per cent of the energy consumption in the UK, recent years have seen the government introduce a series of initiatives designed to encourage more energy efficient buildings, including the legal requirement for EPCs.”
