LEADING Scots will today take part in a series of home visits with refugee and asylum seekers across Glasgow to swap stories of home.
The home visits are taking place to launch the programme of Refugee Week Scotland 2009, and to raise awareness of Scotland’s importance as a safe and welcoming home for those who have been fleeing conflict, persecution and danger.
Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, and Emma Pollock, musician and former member of critically acclaimed band the Delgados, are among high-profile Scots involved in the visits.
John Byrne, artist and writer, whose work includes the iconic Slab Boys trilogy, is also taking part in the project.
Each has been teamed with a refugee or asylum seeker who has made a new life in Scotland and who will host a HOME Visit during which they will share experiences and discuss what home means to them.

Hosts include Amal Azzudin, the founder member of the campaigning group the Glasgow Girls and Fuad Warsame, who arrived in Scotland from Somalia as an unaccompanied minor and this year won Glasgow Trades Hall’s Modern Apprentice of the Year.
